Our Story

Medallion. You may recognise the name.  We’re one of NZ’s original dog food businesses and have been making high-quality dog food in Central Hawke’s Bay since 1975.

Or you may be part of our Farmer Exchange service, where farmers swap low-productive stock for high-performance dog nutrition. By sending tail-enders to Medallion for processing when it’s convenient, farmers get quality Medallion dog food in exchange from their local PGGW stockist when they need it. If you don’t already use it, find out more about this simple, cost-effective service.

Our roots are firmly rural. Medallion (formerly Total Pet Food) opened in Waipukurau in the 1970s as a cooperative of Central HB farmers, offering farmers the forbearer of what is today the Farmer Exchange Service.

Over the years it was bought by various iconic owners and agricultural businesses, including Williams & Kettles, and PGG Wrightson. Current owners, Alastair Haliburton and Jane de Borchgrave, bought the business in 2015 and are involved in it full-time.

Today, Medallion’s dog nutrition range includes products that are specifically tailored for the needs of both NZ rural working dogs and NZ companion dogs. We also slaughter pasture-reared NZ sheep and cattle for pet food, supplying wholesale fresh meat to other NZ pet food manufacturers.

Our focus remains on producing dog food with high-quality, raw meat and minimal additives. As a local meat company, we have access to fresh NZ meat. This means we can avoid using meat powders and high levels of carbohydrates. We use traditional recipes as a base and apply insights from science to make high-quality nutrition specifically for dogs.
